Best Practices for Artists Using Instagram, Facebook, TikTok & Pinterest

Social media can be a powerful tool to showcase your artwork, connect with potential buyers, and grow your audience. If you’re new to these platforms, here’s how to use them effectively without feeling overwhelmed.

1. Start with the Right Platforms
Instagram & Facebook – Great for sharing finished artworks, updates, and engaging with your community.
Pinterest – Perfect for showcasing your work as a visual portfolio and driving traffic to your website.
TikTok – Good for behind-the-scenes videos, time-lapses, and storytelling about your creative process.

2. Keep It Simple & Consistent
Choose 1-2 platforms to focus on rather than trying to do everything at once.
Post 2-3 times per week to stay visible but not overwhelmed.
Use a scheduling tool like Meta Business Suite (for Facebook & Instagram) or Tailwind (for Pinterest) to plan posts in advance.

3. Share Your Story & Process
People love to connect with the artist behind the work. Share photos or short videos of your creative process, workspace, or inspiration.
Don’t worry about being perfect—authenticity is more engaging than polished marketing.

4. Use Hashtags & Local Tags
On Instagram and TikTok, use relevant hashtags like #NZArtist #ArtLover #HandmadeNZ #NelsonTasmanArt.
Tag locations to reach local audiences, especially if you sell at markets or galleries.

5. Engage with Your Audience
Respond to comments and messages to build relationships.
Follow and support other artists—you’ll grow your network faster by engaging with others.

6. Use Video (Even If You’re Camera-Shy)
Short videos (15-30 seconds) perform well on TikTok, Instagram Reels, and Pinterest Idea Pins.
Show a work-in-progress, a time-lapse of your painting, or talk briefly about your inspiration.
If you’re not comfortable on camera, film your artwork with a simple voiceover.

7. Direct People to Where They Can Buy
Include links to your website, online store, or gallery profile in your bio.
If you sell via email or private commissions, let people know how to contact you.

8. Avoid Overwhelm & Have Fun
Social media should work for you, not the other way around. Set time limits (e.g., 15 minutes a day) to engage without getting lost in endless scrolling.
Focus on sharing what you love rather than chasing trends.
