Resilience and Fragility: Reflections from New Zealand's Coastlines and Bush
By Tania Spitzmesser
Exploring the delicate balance between resilience and fragility, pieces capture the raw beauty of New Zealand's coastlines and bush. Through the discovery of leaf and sea animal skeletons, the eroding forms evoke a blend of beauty, sadness, and celebration of life. These decaying structures tell stories and inspire reflections on our interactions with the environment.
The chosen materials symbolise the fleeting nature of these encounters with the natural world. Each walk is a brief yet profound moment before returning to the urban landscape, highlighting the stark contrast between organic and constructed forms. This juxtaposition invites viewers to ponder our relationship with nature and the impact of our presence within it.
As an artist, my passion lies in creating mixed-media abstract paintings and collage pieces that are both visually stunning and emotionally evocative. My work is inspired by a range of different colour palettes, each carefully selected to elicit specific emotional states and moods.
For me, the most important aspect of creating art is the ability to connect with viewers on a deep, emotional level. I want my paintings to serve as a canvas for people to draw on their own stories, memories, and experiences, allowing them to find their meaning and connection within my work.
When creating my pieces, I think of myself as building an artistic mosaic. Each element of my work - from the textures to the bold impressions - is carefully selected and arranged to create a cohesive and impactful whole.
Throughout my artistic journey, I have been greatly influenced by the many different cultures, landscapes, and experiences I have encountered through my travels around the world. These influences can be seen in my work, as I strive to infuse each piece with a sense of global perspective and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the world around us.
